RDI has developed a picture story set that presents social and personal values as explained with culturally relevant illustrations.   Using traditional and ancient stories from far Western Asia, each illustration aids the storyteller to explain over 40 complete stories.  These are some of the first illustrated stories of their kind designed specifically for Khmer culture.

In addition to this work, our RDI medical team has written dozens of culturally appropriate stories that share social and personal values while simultaneously teaching health and traditional medicine.

The RDI education team shares these stories at schools and homes and other local gathering places.  By using such stories, the RDI team can more easily educate Khmer through the oral tradition. As RDI builds relationships with various communities, a new story can be told on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as a way to educate the community.

"Storying (story telling) is a method of teaching that appears to be effective in most third world countries.  The people of these countries respond much better to oral messages instead of written ones.  This method also allows you to reach the masses which are illiterate.  Cambodia has one of the highest rate of illiteracy in the world.  So we are using this method of telling stories to educate people.  We, as you can see, are also using drawings which were produced for the Khmer culture.  These pictures communicate stories and concepts you already know, but in a context that is appropriate, for the thousands of Khmer who have never heard.  A team of people from various organizations have spent 3 years developing materials for this project.  The project is currently being field tested.  The next phase will be to print materials in bulk for distribution.  One way you can help is by assisting with the cost of printing these materials."

Village health and education with storying is closely related to our medical and education branches of RDI.  Be sure to take a close look at these sections to better understand how these projects work together.

Some stories teach community values and personal responsibility.

Other stories are fanciful examples of forgiveness and mercy with exciting adventures in the natural and supernatural world.
