Meet the Bridge Program Students (2008 intake)

Ngin Putheary
Putheary

My name is Putheary and I come from Phnom Penh. My nickname is Theary. I was born in 1983. I have two brothers and two sisters and I am the youngest in my family. In 2004 I finished a high school diploma in General English at Panasastra University of Cambodia. I got a scholarship to study Biochemistry at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. When I was a second year student I had experience as a research assistant in a project (measuring heavy metals in wetlands) for one year and a half with Buffalo State University in New York. I used this work to write a thesis about pesticides. In 2008 I graduated from my Bachelor’s degree with honours

I have gained a lot of skills from the Bridge Program. The program helps me to develop my critical thinking, learn research skills, improve my English and become familiar with Western education systems. In the future I hope I can use all of the knowledge and skills I gain from the program to continue on to a Master’s degree in a Western countr

I like reading English books, watching English movies and listening to English songs in my free time because they will help me to improve my English as well!

Neung Saophuong
Saophuong

My name is Saophuong. I graduated from Royal University of Phnom Penh in 2008. My background is in Environmental Science. I am really interested in the Bridge Program. This program gives me opportunities to upgrade my knowledge and hopefully study abroad. Having been involved in projects and training provided by the program lets me understand new things that are really important for me. I had never taken exciting courses at University, but here is really different. A few provided courses made me feel confident in myself. I really liked those applied courses. I hope to learn and experience more skills along the way with the program. Moreover I hope I will have an opportunity to study abroad. Nowhere else in Cambodia would I learn and gain experience with such incredible professors and courses.

In the future I want to be an environmental expert and make change and progress in my country. Moreover, I wish to share knowledge and experiences from the program to Cambodian people. On the weekend I like to read the newspaper, read books, search the internet and listen to my favorite music.

Yen Sophearith
Sophearith

I am Yen Sophearith and I come from Prey Veng Province, Cambodia. I was born in 1986 and have five sisters and four brothers.

In 2003 I finished high school and received a scholarship to study at Royal University of Phnom Penh, majoring in Environmental Science. I graduated in 2008 and got a job in a consultancy firm. However I did not feel that I had sufficient skills for that environment and wanted to do further study to improve. So I applied to the Bridge Program because it  was a good chance to study and do research with professors from different backgrounds. I hope the program will help me to improve my English as well.

I like to play computer games, watch videos, cook and talk with friends in my spare time.

Chea Srey-Neang
Sreyneng

My name is Srey-Neang and I come from Prey Veng Province in Cambodia. I finished high school in 2003. After I finished high school I got a half scholarship at Cambodia Mekong University and studied Computer Science, but I did not finish because I could not support myself. Then I got a full scholarship to Royal University of Phnom Penh to study Environmental Science and graduated in 2008. Sometimes I thought I would not graduate because it was difficult to work and study at the same time.

I enjoyed the work I did on a waste water project for 18 months as I was able to improve my knowledge in that area. I also worked with a Master’s student in co-operation with WildAid on a wildlife conservation and livelihood project. The Bridge Program is a good chance for me to continue my studies because I did not get a good enough score to apply for a scholarship abroad.

I hope I will get more experience and knowledge and build my capacity to reach my goal of studying in USA. After I finish my studiesI want to work in social development. When I have free time I like to read books, play sport and listen to music.

Chan Lakhena
Leakhena

My name’s Lakhena and I was born in 1985. In 2004 I got a scholarship at Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), my major was Environmental Science. At RUPP I studied lectures that related to social Environmental Science. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in July 2008 and completed my thesis with honours. I joined the Bridge Program in October 2008.

In this program I have taken courses about water treatment, GIS, GPS and was involved with a PhD candidate’s project that compared the effectiveness of ceramic filters and biosand filters. In this project we have tested a lot of parameters related to the water quality in the microbiology lab. I have also learned English.

In this program I hope that I can learn many different subjects that can help me improve my knowledge related to science. After the program I hope that I have enough knowledge to study abroad. In my future I hope that I can help develop my country with my skills.
In my free time I like to talk to my friends, do housework and read books!

Sok Kunthy

My name is Kunthy. I was born in 1983 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree (Biochemistry major) in 2004 from Royal University of Phnom Penh. I’ve been working at RDI since November 2005.

I hope the Bridge Program builds my capacity as a student through studying in English and doing research work with international professors. After I finish the program I hope my English will be improved, and I will get a lot of experience and information from doing research which will be useful for helping people and developing my country. If I have the ability I want to study a Master’s degree in a Western country.

In my free time I like reading books, listening to music and seeing nature.

Chea Phallin
Phallin

I’m Mr. Chea Phallin. I was born in 1985 in Prey Veng Province (Cambodia). I’m from a farmer’s family that migrated to Phnom Penh in 1992. I lived and studied hard and worked to help my family. But it made me happy that I had a good chance to study. I have never failed an exam from primary school to high school.

In 2004, I got a scholarship from the Royal University of Phnom Penh in Environmental Science. It was a big surprise for me and my family.

My family were very proud of my achievement and degree. They expected and challenged me to continue to study. I graduated in 2008 and applied to study at RDIC in the Bridge Program. This program’s goal is to build up our capacity to study in a western country. I hope that two and a half years will give me more scientific knowledge and skill. Especially I hope to see the whole world and protect the world’s health.

If I have free time I normally go to meet with friends, listen to music and sleep.
